Media History Repeats: "Games under attack: Addiction and Violence"

I agreed that games have strongly led to addiction to people in all level of ages especially teenagers and violence which depicted in video games led to public concern of how it would affect badly to them. As commented by Mr. Lowenstein (2005),” One thing to say a product is protected speech, which it is, or that it is rated and parents need to accept responsibility for what their kids play, which they do”. By other means, parents should protect and be more aware of what video games played by their child since they are rated. The lack of awareness from parents causes their children to be exposed to addiction and violence in video games. The Charlotte Observer Health section has an interesting article on serving cold turkey to starve video game addiction. As said by a parent in this article,” After initially complaining that her son was on the computer "pretty much every waking moment unless he was at school or work," and after I told her that she needed to take control where he had lost control, she and her husband lost their nerve and cut him back to four hours a day on school days and eight hours a day on weekends. No, seriously. She later admitted "I obviously am a total wimp" and "I feel really stupid about not having much backbone." Furthermore, one study reveals that young men who are habitually aggressive may be especially vulnerable to the aggression-enhancing effects of repeated exposure to violent games," said psychologists Craig A. Anderson, Ph.D., and Karen E. Dill, Ph.D. "The other study reveals that even a brief exposure to violent video games can temporarily increase aggressive behavior in all types of participants.

  1. I just want to add, eventhough parents are aware and try to protect their children from video games addiction and violence, children now a days are just too smart that they will think of ways to play video games. For example, they will give excuses like going over to friend's house for discussion of project, but the purpose of going over is to play video games instead. My point is that children will find ways and excuses to lie to their parents to be able to play video games.

  2. yes children will find ways to play those video games but it is still the parents responsibilities to be on the toes of their offspring. they should know at least if their child was lying or have some kind of control over their kid's limitations on playing video games. if the child was found guilty of lying to their parents, then appropriate punishments should be given!

  3. but some parents have to work everyday! i think teenagers have the responsible to different that what is good and bad. maybe parents have to pay attention where they were a child.
